How Long a Consultation Takes, and How to Make It Last
By Designs by Terrie | Hair Salon | August 30, 2026
A hair consultation typically takes 15 to 60 minutes. A quick trim plan or style check is usually 15 to 20 minutes. Color, chemical services, or big changes can take 30 to 60 minutes or more if we need extra time to talk details. And yes, the goal is the same one we hear all the time: you want to leave feeling confident in your style, not confused about what’s next.
In our Stone Oak salon in San Antonio, we keep consultations practical. We’ll get clear on what you want, what your hair will realistically do, and what maintenance looks like so your hair color, highlights, or haircut still looks good after real life hits, including heat, humidity, and the occasional pool day.
The real consultation timeline: 15–20 vs. 30–60 minutes
If you’re searching “hair salon near me” and trying to fit a visit into a packed week, timing matters. Here’s how we usually break it down:
15–20 minutes: quick plan
Best for a trim strategy, bangs, a men’s haircut plan, or a simple refresh. If you bring a couple photos, we can move fast. We’ll talk face-framing, how much you’re comfortable taking off, and what you want your day-to-day styling to look like.
30–60+ minutes: color, big changes, or problem-solving
This is where we slow down for hair color, balayage, highlights, gray blending, extensions planning (including tape-in extensions), or a major restyle like a butterfly cut. If you’ve had tricky past color, if your hair is very long or very dense, or if we need to do a test for safety, we’ll take the time we need so you’re not guessing.
Stone Oak timing tip: We’re easy to reach from US-281 and Loop 1604, so a dedicated consultation visit can be a simple in-and-out stop before you commit to a longer color appointment.
What we cover in a 30-minute Consultation (and why it saves you time later)
Our Consultation service is booked as a 30-minute appointment and it’s $25. That time is for getting specific. People come to us after searching “haircut near me” or “hair extension near me” because they want someone who listens and gives real recommendations, not a rushed yes to everything.
We’ll talk through your goal, what you’ve loved and hated in the past, and what your hair is doing right now. If you’re planning highlights or a significant hair color change, we focus on tone, maintenance, and how to avoid that brassy or orange look people dread. If you’re thinking extensions, we’ll talk about your current density and your comfort level with upkeep before we suggest a plan.
And yes, we’re happy when you bring photos. Several clients do, and it helps us match what you’re seeing in your head to what will work on your texture, including curls and kinky-curly hair.

Make your hair color and cut last longer in San Antonio heat: our simple checklist
San Antonio’s sun is no joke, and the humidity in summer can turn a great blow dry into frizz fast. These are the habits that usually keep hair looking fresh the longest after a cut, highlights, or balayage:
- Wash less often if you can. Even stretching by one wash per week helps reduce color fade. Dry shampoo can be your best friend on busy weeks.
- Rinse cooler. Warm water tends to open the cuticle more. A cooler rinse helps your color look richer, longer.
- Use salon-grade shampoo and conditioner. If you invest in a service, protect that investment. We’ll recommend what matches your hair, not what sits on a shelf.
- Heat protectant, every time. Flat iron, curling iron, hot brush, even a blow dry. Consistent heat protection keeps ends from looking rough before your next trim.
- UV protection for hair. Year-round sun can fade hair color and make hair feel drier. A UV spray or hat helps, especially if you’re outdoors a lot.
- Pool plan. If you’re swimming, rinse your hair before and after. Chlorine can shift tone fast, especially on blondes and highlighted hair.
- Bring your real routine into the consultation. If you only style twice a week, tell us. If you need an updo option for events, tell us. We’ll build a plan that fits your life.
Want the printable version? We keep this same approach in our Consultation aftercare checklist, so you don’t have to rely on memory once you’re back home.
Why results fade early: 5 fixes that actually help
Most “it didn’t last” issues come down to a few repeat patterns, not bad luck. The good news is they’re fixable.
- Over-washing and hot water. Fix it by spacing washes and rinsing cooler.
- Skipping heat protectant. Fix it by keeping one next to your tools so it’s automatic.
- Using harsh clarifying shampoo too often. Fix it by saving it for true buildup days, not weekly habit.
- Sun and outdoor time without protection. Fix it with UV spray, a hat, or protective styling.
- Trying to force a shade that fights your maintenance level. Fix it by choosing tones and placement that grow out gracefully.
If you’re dealing with previous color that’s uneven or unpredictable, a consultation matters even more. We walk through options in our color correction Consultation guide so you know what’s realistic before we start.
When to rebook after a Consultation: a maintenance plan that fits your calendar
A solid consultation ends with a simple maintenance plan. That’s how you keep the “I love it” feeling going, especially if you’re driving in from Live Oak, Schertz, Selma, Windcrest, or Universal City and you don’t want to be guessing when you’ll need the next step.
In general, many haircuts feel best with a trim schedule, and color maintenance depends on what we’re doing, like highlights versus all-over color versus gray blending. We’ll talk through signs you’re ready to come back, like your ends losing shape, your tone shifting warmer than you like, or your styling taking longer than it should.
