Color Only Aftercare: What To Do in the First 2 Weeks
By Designs by Terrie | Hair Salon | October 19, 2026
Quick note: Our Color Only service is 120 minutes and $90, and it’s designed to enhance your natural shade or change it entirely. Aftercare is what keeps that fresh color looking like you just left our chair.
We love seeing the “LOVE MY CUT & COLOR ❤️” excitement right after an appointment. The single most important rule for Color Only aftercare is this: wait at least 48 to 72 hours before your first wash. That window helps your tone settle so it stays rich and even. And in San Antonio sun, protecting your color early makes a big difference.
First 72 hours after Color Only: the rules that prevent fast fade
If you do just a few things right away, you’ll usually keep your hair color looking smoother and shinier for longer. Here’s what we generally recommend right after a Color Only service.
1) Don’t wash yet
Hold off on shampoo for 48 to 72 hours. If your roots get oily, use a light dry shampoo and keep it off the mid-lengths and ends.
2) Skip heavy sweating and heat
For the first 72 hours, avoid intense workouts, saunas, and anything that leaves your scalp drenched. Sweat plus heat can nudge color to fade faster. If you need movement, keep it light and keep your hair dry.
3) Be careful in the shower
You can shower, but don’t let hot water soak your hairline and scalp. Clip your hair up. If your hair gets damp, rinse with cooler water and gently blot, don’t rub.
Stone Oak shortcut for evening appointments: If you’re heading home after a long commute on US-281 or Loop 1604, keep it simple. Hair up, keep shower water off your hair, then a quick cool rinse at the hairline if you need it. Two minutes. Done.
Days 4 to 7: keep that “fresh color” look, not brassy or flat
That first week is where good color stays good. We do a lot of tone work, and our regulars are very clear about what they want: no brassy or orange showing up a week later. Your habits matter here.
Sun and water are the fastest way to dull tone in San Antonio
San Antonio has strong year-round sun, and in summer the humidity and heat make it easy to end up outdoors longer than you planned. If you’re outside for more than a quick walk to the car, use a UV protectant spray or wear a hat. And yes, it makes a difference, especially on lighter shades and anything you’re keeping cool-toned.
Pool and hot tub rule: Avoid chlorinated pools, saltwater, and hot tubs for the first week if you can. If you can’t, wet your hair with clean water first, add a little conditioner to the ends, then rinse well right after.
Don’t “fix” your color at home
If you feel like your tone shifted or looks different under your bathroom lighting, don’t reach for a box dye or a random toning shampoo. A lot of our color correction guests come to us after a quick DIY fix turned into a bigger project. Let us know what you’re seeing, and we’ll tell you the simplest next step.
Your 3 to 5 minute Color Only routine (plus a weekend mask)
Busy professionals and parents do best with aftercare that doesn’t turn into a second job. Here’s the routine we keep coming back to because it’s simple and it works.
Shampoo: sulfate-free and color-safe
Use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo. Keep shampoo mostly at the scalp. Let the suds rinse through the ends instead of scrubbing the length.
Conditioner: every wash, mid-lengths to ends
Conditioner keeps hair reflective, and reflective hair makes color look better. Apply mid-lengths to ends, comb through with your fingers, then rinse with cooler water.
Heat: keep it low for 2 weeks
Minimize hot tools for two weeks. When you do a blow dry, use heat protectant first and keep the temperature moderate. High heat can dull tone fast.
Weekly: deep-conditioning mask
Once a week, do a deep-conditioning mask. Ten minutes while you handle weekend chores is enough for most hair types, including fine hair if you rinse well.
If you found us searching hair salon near me or haircut near me, this routine still applies. It also helps keep other services looking better, like highlights and other color work. Healthy, hydrated hair behaves.
Week 2: when to text us, and when to plan your next color
By week two, your color should feel like “you, ” just better. If something looks off, we’d rather you reach out early than live with it. We’re known for listening, explaining the why, and handling complicated color changes step by step, including transitions like going brunette to a softer silver/taupe tone.
Reach out if you notice:
- Uneven fade that shows up after your first couple washes
- A tone shift you don’t like, especially warmth creeping in
- Dryness that doesn’t improve with conditioner and a mask
Touch-ups are usually every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your root growth and the look you’re maintaining. And if you’re in Live Oak, Windcrest, Schertz, Selma, or Universal City and you’re outside a lot, UV protection becomes part of your schedule just like shampoo.
A quick note on other services you might be pairing with Color Only
We do plenty beyond Color Only. If you’re also thinking about other hair services, tell us during your consult so we can keep your at-home products and heat habits aligned. Same goes for a color refresh. The best results come when the service and the home routine match.
Need help picking products? Bring what you’re using now, or send us a quick list. We’ll point you toward a color-safe shampoo and conditioner that fit your hair texture and your schedule.
